Would anyone give their child a bag of broken glass for Christmas? I doubt that anyone would want their child near a bag of broken, jagged pieces of glass. And yet many of us will feed ourselves and our kids with the equivalent of a bag of broken glass --- with foods that create debilitating longer-term chronic consequences to our health.
Think about this Dan Aykroyd skit on Saturday Night Live next time you hear a food company say that they're just giving the consumer what the consumer wants. While the idea of a bag of broken glass sounds ridiculous, the statements made about it in this skit are statements we hear quite often from corporate public relations professionals.
And as long as we continue to buy the rhetoric (as well as their products), we'll continue to get more of the same.
